Chic Chicago presents the hallmarks of modern fashion. The exhibition's extraordinary garments date from 1861 to 2004 and represent the most prominent couturiers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Each gown has a strong connection to Chicago and belongs to the Museum's permanent collection. The Chicago History Museum has been collecting historical dress since 1898, exhibiting the collection for more than 80 years, and today, houses one of the country's largest and oldest costume collections -- with more than 50,000 pieces. The collection consists of couture gowns worn by prominent Chicago doyennes, dresses made by Chicago manufacturers, and artifacts worn by famous, infamous, and everyday Chicagoans.
